They Raised $22,000, but the Relationship Is the Real Story

Phi Sigma Pi’s Alpha Eta Chapter paired childhood-cancer fundraising with a continuing relationship that treats one family as people, not a campaign.

Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity’s Alpha Eta Chapter raised more than $22,000 for the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation through UDance in 2025. The chapter also maintained an ongoing relationship with its B+ Hero, Benny Pin, and his family, showing that support for children facing cancer can include both fundraising and personal connection.

The Professional Fraternity Association recognized Alpha Eta with its 2025 Outstanding Community Service Award.

What did Alpha Eta accomplish?

The Alpha Eta Chapter operates at the University of Delaware. Its members participate in UDance, the university’s student-run philanthropy supporting the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation.

Phi Sigma Pi reports that Alpha Eta raised more than $22,000 during the 2025 campaign. The chapter’s fundraising contributed to the $1.8 million raised through UDance that year.

The Professional Fraternity Association confirmed that Alpha Eta received its Outstanding Community Service Award, which recognizes a chapter that has given personal and financial support to improve its community.

Who is Benny Pin?

Benny is Alpha Eta’s B+ Hero, a child connected with the chapter through the B+ Foundation. Phi Sigma Pi reports that the chapter began its relationship with Benny and his family in 2022.

Members have celebrated birthdays, gone ice skating, visited orchards, and spent time together outside formal fundraising events. Those details separate the relationship from a one-day campaign.

A child facing cancer should not be reduced to a photograph, fundraising total, or annual event theme. Maintaining contact allows members to support a family as people with lives, interests, and experiences that are not defined only by illness.

How does UDance support families facing childhood cancer?

UDance is the University of Delaware’s largest student-run philanthropic program. It supports the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, an organization created after 14-year-old Andrew McDonough died from leukemia in 2007.

The University of Delaware reported that the foundation assisted over 4,000 families with nearly $6 million in 2024. It has also funded more than 250 childhood-cancer research grants and provides family-support resources.

The university confirmed that UDance surpassed $1.8 million in 2025. Alpha Eta’s contribution represents one chapter’s part in that larger student effort.

Why does an honor fraternity belong in the Greek-life service conversation?

Phi Sigma Pi is a national honor fraternity organized around scholarship, leadership, and fellowship. It does not fit neatly into the social-fraternity categories that receive most public attention.

The Greek-letter ecosystem includes honor, professional, service, cultural, social, religious, military-affiliated, and interest-based organizations. Their membership models differ, but members can still organize substantial community work.

Alpha Eta’s recognition is a reminder that public accounts of Greek life should not stop with the largest or most familiar councils.

Consistency creates a different kind of impact

Fundraising totals help document what a chapter contributed. Relationships explain how members showed care while raising those funds.

The award does not mean the work is finished. Childhood cancer continues to affect families, and support programs depend on continued participation. It does mean Alpha Eta created a service record that can be verified, explained, and connected to people.

  • A verified chapter fundraising total
  • Participation in a larger university campaign
  • Support for childhood-cancer research and family assistance
  • A continuing relationship with a B+ Hero and his family
  • Recognition from a national professional-fraternity association
