Dr. Michael D. Shonrock helped lead the Delta Tau Delta Educational Foundation through the largest capital campaign in its history. The Forging the Future Campaign raised nearly $33 million to support scholarships, educational programs, leadership development, and member experiences.

The Foundation for Fraternal Excellence selected Shonrock as a 2026 Outstanding Foundation Volunteer for his leadership, donor engagement, and personal financial commitment.

What did Michael Shonrock help accomplish?

Shonrock joined the Delta Tau Delta Educational Foundation Board in 2016 and became chairman in 2022.

The Educational Foundation began the Forging the Future Campaign during his board service. The campaign exceeded its goals and raised nearly $33 million.

The funds increased the foundation’s capacity to support leadership development, educational programming, scholarships, and member experiences. A fundraising total does not explain the complete contribution. Shonrock was also credited with recruiting volunteers, mentoring future leaders, and strengthening donor participation.

Why does volunteer governance matter?

Large fundraising campaigns require planning, donor relationships, financial oversight, reporting, and clear decisions about how resources will support the organization’s educational purpose.

Board members are responsible for much of that work, even when the public sees only the final campaign total.

Shonrock’s recognition identifies the people-management and relationship work that helped make the campaign possible.

  • Reviewing financial and campaign reports
  • Approving policies and monitoring program funding
  • Recruiting qualified board members
  • Supporting professional staff
  • Contacting donors and protecting donor intent
  • Preparing future officers
  • Explaining how contributions are used

He also made a personal financial commitment

Shonrock has contributed to the Delta Tau Delta Educational Foundation since 1986. The Foundation for Fraternal Excellence reports that he and his wife, Karen, made a $1 million gift commitment and received the foundation’s Crystal Vision Award.

Their commitment is separate from the nearly $33 million campaign total and should not be presented as an additional campaign. The campaign total represents what the full initiative raised, while the $1 million represents Michael and Karen Shonrock’s personal commitment.

Accurate impact reporting identifies what each number represents instead of combining them into a larger total.

What is his role within Delta Tau Delta?

Delta Tau Delta’s official leadership profile identifies Shonrock as chairman of the Educational Foundation and a 1979 graduate of Western Illinois University.

He previously served the fraternity as International Director of Academic Affairs, chapter advisor to the Epsilon Delta Chapter at Texas Tech University, and colony advisor at the University of North Texas.

His current foundation role also gives him a seat on Delta Tau Delta’s Arch Chapter, the fraternity’s governing board. The arrangement connects educational fundraising with the organization’s wider governance while preserving the foundation chairman’s specific responsibilities.

Why does this belong in the impact record?

Greek-letter impact is often presented through chapter service hours, philanthropy events, and money donated to outside nonprofits. Educational foundations represent another part of that record.

A fraternity or sorority foundation may fund scholarships, leadership programs, educational conferences, academic support, research, training, and member-development programs.

The people who govern those foundations affect whether funds are raised responsibly, distributed according to purpose, and maintained for future members. Their contributions may not produce the same photographs as a service project, but they determine which educational opportunities can be funded and sustained.

What should future reporting examine?

The campaign total establishes what was raised. Future reports can explain what the funding produced.

Useful measures could include scholarships awarded, students and members served, educational programs funded, leadership-program participation, chapter education grants, students supported, donor-retention rates, and long-term use of campaign funds.

Those results would connect fundraising success with the people and programs the foundation exists to support.
